Belt Whipping / Belt Gauntlet – A Symbolic Tradition
After receiving a new belt, we have a tradition at Bittan Academy:
the new practitioner walks between two rows of training partners, who lightly tap their belts across their backs. Children, teenagers, and adults raise their hands, and we all finish with high-fives.
This is not a codified rite established by any federation, but an informal custom passed down through generations. When you change your belt, you change your status. You are accepted by the group and become a full part of the academy’s family.
This tradition is not about pain or punishment. It is a symbolic moment of recognition, unity, and belonging — an echo of the heritage found in many older martial disciplines.
Each academy chooses how it honors its members. At Bittan Academy, this moment represents respect, connection, and shared commitment on the journey of jiu-jitsu.
